Scientific Sessions 2016

The Tenth Annual Academic Sessions of the Faculty of Medical Sciences were held on 7 and 8 April 2016 at the Golden Rose, Boralasgamuwa, under the theme “Excellence in Medicine through Innovative Research”. The sessions were organised by the Research Committee chaired by Dr Pradeepa Jayawardene.

The Annual Oration was delivered by Professor Sugandika Suresh, Professor of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medical Sciences, on “The role of herbal extracts and functional foods in the management of chronic disorders”. The plenary lecture was delivered by Professor Srinath Chandrasekara on “Management of urolithiasis: the need for further research and innovation”.

The scientific programme comprised four symposia, 12 oral presentations, and 53 poster presentations, reflecting strong research engagement across disciplines. The first symposium, themed “Excellence in Research”, addressed ethical considerations, clinical trials, and translational research, with presentations on ethics in research, clinical trials, and bench-to-bedside research.

The second symposium focused on advances in cardiac arrhythmias, featuring expert discussions on arrhythmia mechanisms, non-cardiac causes, and surgical perspectives. A third symposium on controversies in medicine examined critical issues including disease construction, chronic kidney disease in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, and challenges in diabetes management.

The fourth and final symposium adopted a multidisciplinary approach to medicine, addressing collaborative care for the elderly, the timely role of palliative care, and advances in functional reconstruction of the injured hand and upper limb.

The 2016 Academic Sessions marked a significant milestone in the evolution of the Faculty’s scholarly activities, highlighting innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the growing impact of research-driven medical practice.
