Diriya Aruna

“Diriya Aruna”, a charity project conceived by our Faculty, aims at providing necessary infrastructure facilities to needy students in Sri Lanka. Since its inception in 1997, it has reached out to 25 (upto 2023) schools island wide. In each installment, a school is sought and facilities (classrooms constructed, book donations etc.) to meet the demands of the student population in the institution. This is indeed a mammoth project which ensures that the underprivileged children would achieve an excellent education as we believe that education is the most effective way for individuals to improve their own lives.

“Diriya Aruna” is an annual social services project conducted by each successive batch of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, along with the Medical Faculty Students’ Union, under the guidance of the Dean and all the academic staff of the Faculty.

Traditionally, ‘Diriya Aruna’ project is organized by 1^st year students and completed by the end of the 1^st MBBS examination. Many fund-raising events such as car washes, food stalls, personalized card makings, bakes sales are conducted by students to collect funds for the project. All the buildings which are renovated and built through ‘Diriya Aruna’ are named in honor of the legendary foreseer, Prof. Senaka Bibile; a tradition followed throughout the years. The opening ceremony is graced by the Dean of the Faculty. Traditionally, a seminar series targeting the O/L examination and a medical camp to solve health issues of the public near the school are organized alongside the ceremony.
