Annual Scientific Sessions 2012

The Eighth Annual Academic Sessions of the Faculty of Medical Sciences were held on 6 and 7 December 2012 at the Anatomy Auditorium, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The sessions were organised under the leadership of the Research Committee, with Professor S. B. Gunatilake serving as Chairperson and Dr P. Jayawardane as Secretary of the Organising Committee.

A notable milestone of the 2012 sessions was the first-ever Faculty Oration, delivered by Dr Neelika Malavige, Department of Microbiology, on “Tracking Silent Dengue Infection”. The plenary lecture was delivered by Dr Kamani Wanigasuriya on “Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Origin”.

The scientific programme comprised four symposia, reflecting the breadth and interdisciplinary nature of medical research and education. A symposium on medical education addressed contemporary challenges and assessment strategies, followed by a symposium on medicine, which featured expert discussions on asthma co-morbidities, acute febrile illness in the tropics, and age-related physiological changes. Another symposium focused on childhood obesity, covering its epidemiology, health impact, and management, with contributions from national and international experts, including representation from the World Health Organization. The final symposium centred on surgery, addressing topics such as urolithiasis, lower urinary tract physiology, and challenges in contemporary medical education.

The 2012 Academic Sessions featured 24 oral presentations and 41 poster presentations, marking a significant expansion in research output and participation. CollectThis event further strengthened the role of the Annual Academic Sessions as a key platform for scholarly exchange, research dissemination, and academic leadership within the Faculty.
