INTERNAL QUALITY ASSURANCE CELL

FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (IQAC- FMS) was established in 2020 under the directive of the Center for Quality Assurance of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Prior to its establishment, Head of the Department of Medical Education has represented the Faculty at the University Senate Standing Committee on Quality assurance. The IQAC- FMS liaises with the different departments of Faculty of Medical Sciences to initiate, plan and supervise activities to uplift the quality of the MBBS programme of the Faculty in line with the National Quality Assurance Framework of Sri Lanka under the directions of the Center for Quality Assurance (CQA), of the University.  The IQAC- FMS is responsible for developing the guidelines relating to the QA activities and overseeing the implementation of such activities. The activities overseen by the IQAC- FMS will comprise of, but not restricted to, the eight programme review criteria identified in the ‘Manual for Review of Undergraduate Study Programmes of Sri Lankan Universities and Higher Education Institutions’ by the University Grants Commission.

The IQAC- FMS operates based on the following broad principles:

  • Adoption of a holistic approach and integrate academic, academic support and administrative activities of the Faculty to ensure fulfillment of the required academic and professional standards.
  • Recognition and appreciation of the diversity of disciplines and/or subject areas offered by the Faculty.
  • Promotion of open-minded discussion among the academic, academic support and administrative staff to enhance confidence on Quality Assurance (QA) and create team-spirit in carrying out QA related activities.
  • Rely on multiple methods and perspectives to improve quality, thus diversity within the faculty is not affected.
  • Adoption of an evidence-based approach to QA with a focus on continuous improvement of academic and administrative activities of the Faculty

The present IQAC- FMS committee was appointed in 2020 for a period of 3 years. Committee meetings are held monthly on the first Wednesday of each month.

Response to Programme Review 2019

The preceding programme review was conducted in September 2019, following which the IQAC- FMS was revamped in July 2020 and a new committee appointed. The committee members were assigned to eight criterion sub-committees. Each criterion sub-committee was assigned the responsibility of studying the Programme Review Report-2019, scoring given for each standard and the SER relevant to their criterion and to identify activities to be included into the action plan. Meetings were held to discuss the proposed activities by each criterion subcommittee followed by consultative meetings to clarify certain areas activities. A draft action plan prepared by the IQAC- FMS was circulated among the academics and other relevant staff requesting for their comments/suggestions on the 14th July 2021. A special meeting to brief the Faculty on the development of the Action Plan for the Programme review- 2019 was conducted on the 28th July 2021. The action plan was finalized based on the comments/suggestions received and Faculty Board approval obtained on the 8th September 2021 followed by Senate approval on the 7th October 2021. Action plan was submitted to the Quality Assurance Council of the UGC on the 12th October 2021. Throughout the process, Prof. Samanthi Senaratne, Director CQA, was consulted when needed.
