Farewell to an Icon: Celebrating Professor Dulanie Gunasekera's Remarkable Journey
On the 24th of July, 2024, at Ward 41B of the Millennium Building Complex at Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila, the hospital community bid farewell to one of its most distinguished figures, Professor Dulanie Gunasekera of the Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. With a career spanning over three decades, Professor Gunasekera leaves behind a legacy of groundbreaking research, exceptional patient care, and unwavering dedication to the medical field.
A Legacy of Excellence
Professor Gunasekera’s tenure at the university is marked by numerous accolades and significant contributions to medical science. She is known for being a key member in the global effort for development of a dengue vaccine which is currently in phase 3 trials and playing vital roles in various national committees focused on neonatology and mother-baby care. Much of her work has become the modern guidelines used in modern medical practice.
Her influence in the academic sphere has also been profound, mentoring numerous students and young doctors who now carry forward her legacy of excellence and innovation. Almost all graduates from the Faculty of Medical Sciences’ inception itself have been students of hers.
A Celebratory Farewell
The farewell event, held at Ward 41B, was a testament to the high regard in which Professor Gunasekera is held by her colleagues, students, and the broader medical community.
The event commenced with a grand ward round led by Professor Gunasekera; her final walk through the halls where she had dedicated so much of her life, elegantly and breathtakingly decorated for her last few steps in them. This was followed by a series of heartfelt speeches from doctors, students, non-academic staff, minor staff, nurses, and ward sisters, all of whom shared their personal anecdotes and expressed their gratitude for her mentorship and friendship.
The presence of many retired colleagues and former staff members underscores the respect she has fostered over the years.
The celebration coincided with her birthday, adding an extra layer of festivity to the occasion. A beautifully decorated cake, in pink and peach, was cut amid applause and cheer.
Closing the Chapter
The event concluded with attendees extending their best wishes to Professor Gunasekera for her future endeavors. It was a fitting tribute to a remarkable career and an individual who has given so much to the medical field and the university.
