Workshop on Parasitic Diseases in Children, Sri Lanka

What is this workshop?

Parasitic diseases can result in disruption of day-to-day activities, impaired growth, learning difficulties and even death among children. These diseases are often overlooked and under-detected. This workshop aims to provide knowledge on the signs and symptoms, detection, and prevention of common parasitic diseases affecting children in Sri Lanka. An e-certificate will be provided to all participants.

What are the topics covered?

Diseases caused by unicellular organisms (protozoan infections) – Diarrhoea caused by amoebiasis, giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis (ඒක සෛලික පරපෝෂිතයන් විසින් ඇති කරනු ලබන ආන්ත්‍රික රෝග), malaria (මැලේරියා රෝගය), leishmaniasis (වැලි මැස්සන් විසින් ඇති කරන චර්මගත ලිෂ්මේනියාව), toxoplasmosis (බළලුන් විසින් ඇති කරනු ලබන පරපෝෂිත රෝග)

Diseases caused by multicellular organisms (helminth infections) – ascariasis (වට පණු රෝගය), trichuriasis (කස පණු රෝගය), hookworm disease (කොකු පණු රෝගය), enterobiasis (කිරි පණු රෝගය), larva migrans (බල්ලන් සහ බළලුන් විසින් බෝ වන පණු රෝග), cestode and trematode infections (පටි පණු රෝග), filariasis (බරවා රෝගය)
Diseases caused by arthropods – head lice infestation (උකුණන්), scabies (පණු හොරි)
Arthropods as vectors of disease – mosquitoes and flies (මදුරුවන් හා මැස්සන්ගෙන් බෝවන රෝග)

Who is it for?

This is targeted at nurses, midwives, educators and any person willing to gain knowledge on parasitic diseases.

What are the requirements?

The participants should be at least 16 years of age or above.

How is it conducted?

This is a half-day workshop conducted over four hours. The resource personnel are medical doctors who have specialised in Medical Parasitology and are working as lecturers at the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

A series of lectures followed by a brief lab session will be held. Interactive participation is highly encouraged.

What is the medium of instruction?

It will be conducted in simple English. Sinhalese will be used to clarify and reinforce concepts when necessary.

How many participants would be accommodated in the workshop?

To ensure the quality and to provide a brief laboratory session, the participation will be limited to 20.

When is the workshop?

It will be held on the 7th of March 2024 at the Parasitology Seminar room of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Pre-registration will commence on the 1st of February 2024.

Is there a registration fee?

A nominal fee of Rs 2500 per participant will be charged. The amount must be paid in full and the proof of payment must be uploaded at the time of application. It should be noted that the entire payment is utilised towards the improvement of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, and the resource personnel are not taking a payment for conducting this session.
