MURS 2025: National Research Symposium for Medical Undergraduates

The  Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura (FMS-USJ) successfully hosted the Medical Undergraduate Research Symposium (MURS) 2025 on 14th November 2025 at the faculty premises, under the theme “Innovative Research for Sustainable Healthcare.” Organised by the Research Committee of FMS-USJ, the symposium provided a dynamic national platform for medical undergraduates from across Sri Lankan universities to present original, peer-reviewed research addressing health-related challenges aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Inauguration Ceremony of MURS 2025 was graced by Senior Professor Pathmalal M. Manage, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and Professor Manori Gamage, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, whose presence and words of encouragement set the tone for the day. The keynote address was delivered by Vidyajyothi Professor Asita de Silva, Cadre Chair and Senior Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Kelaniya. In a thought-provoking talk, Professor de Silva explored the vital intersection of medical research, innovation, and global health priorities, urging students to align their work with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Drawing from his extensive experience in clinical pharmacology and global health policy, he underscored the importance of ethical, locally relevant, and evidence-based research that responds to real-world healthcare needs. He called on undergraduates to pursue curiosity-driven inquiry, embrace interdisciplinary collaboration, and contribute to sustainable and transformative healthcare innovations. His address served as a timely and inspiring reminder that early-career researchers have a critical role to play in shaping equitable, resilient, and future-ready health systems.

MURS 2025 showcased 62 abstracts, accepted following a rigorous peer-review process conducted by the Scientific Committee. Submissions spanned nine thematic categories, including Primary Healthcare, Non-Communicable Diseases, Education & Student Wellbeing, and Healthcare Innovation. Oral presentations were conducted across three parallel sessions, with over 300 participants in attendance, including student presenters, academic judges, and invited guests. The medical undergraduates delivered high-quality presentations, demonstrating impressive clarity, scientific rigour, and confidence in communicating their research. The Book of Proceedings, which includes all accepted abstracts, is now available for download. A panel of academic judges assessed each session, and the Best Presentation was selected from each thematic track to acknowledge outstanding performance.

Throughout the day, the symposium demonstrated academic rigour, student engagement, and cross-institutional collaboration. Judges and session chairs praised the quality of presentations and the professionalism of the student researchers. The event also featured a dedicated symposium website (https://medical.sjp.ac.lk/murs-fms) and an online submission portal, reflecting the digital-forward approach adopted by the organising team.

A special highlight of MURS 2025 was the official logo competition, organised for medical undergraduates of USJ. The winning design, created by Mr. Zainy Hassan Ziya of the 32nd Batch, was selected for its visual symbolism and thematic alignment, and now features on all official MURS 2025 materials. The best oral presentation in each thematic session was selected by a panel of academic judges and formally recognised with a certificate of achievement at the closing ceremony, celebrating the students’ academic excellence and communication skills. Feedback from attendees, including presenters and judges, emphasised the value of the symposium in developing scientific communication, critical thinking, and professional confidence. The event was widely praised for its structured mentorship, efficient coordination, and the inclusive opportunity it provided for students to share original research on a national platform.

By integrating SDG-focused inquiry, structured mentorship, and opportunities for national-level academic exposure, MURS 2025 stands as a milestone in advancing undergraduate research culture in Sri Lankan medical education. The success of this symposium reflects the collective effort of academic staff, student volunteers, sponsors, and the broader university community.
