Call for Abstracts

The Research Committee of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura invites abstract submissions for the Medical Undergraduate Research Symposium 2025, held under the theme “Innovative Research for Sustainable Healthcare.”

Submissions are welcome from medical undergraduates affiliated with recognised Sri Lankan universities, based on original research conducted during their undergraduate training.

All abstracts must adhere strictly to the prescribed abstract preparation guidelines and must clearly identify the Sustainable Development Goal(s) (SDGs) addressed by the study at the submission. All selected abstracts will be presented as oral presentations.

Details regarding oral presentation guidelines and participant registration will be made available on the symposium website upon notification of abstract acceptance.

Abstract Submission

All abstracts must be submitted ONLINE. The Abstract Preparation Guidelines and a sample abstract are available to download to assist you in following the required format.

  1. The presenting author must be a medical undergraduate affiliated with a recognised Sri Lankan university.
  2. Abstracts submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
  3. The abstract should be submitted electronically on the submission tool.
  4. The abstract should be uploaded to the abstract submission portal along with the author details and the relevant SDGs addressed.
  5. There is no submission or registration fee for the medical undergraduates.
  6. There is no limit to the number of abstracts an individual author may submit.

General Instructions

  1. Title of the Abstract: Maximum character count 250 characters with spaces
  2. Authors and Affiliations:
         > Author name: Initial(s) followed by surname (e.g., M Perera, K Silva)
         > Do not include titles (e.g., Dr, Prof)
         > Author affiliation: only primary affiliation can be submitted
         > Corresponding author: name, email, contact number
         > Presenting author: name, email, contact number
  3. Body of Abstract: Maximum word count 300
  4. Not permitted.
         > No references
         > No brand or company names
         > No tables or figures

Abstract Format

  1. Title: Should be concise and reflect the relevance and innovation of the work.
  2. Author Information: author name/s, affiliation/s, and the email of the corresponding author
  3. Introduction/Background: Provide a brief overview of the problem, existing literature, knowledge gaps, and the study’s significance.
  4. Methods: Clearly describe the
         > Study design and setting
         > Number of participants and inclusion/exclusion criteria
         > Intervention (if applicable)
         > Outcome variables and their measurement
         > Statistical analysis methods
  5. Results: Present subject details, outcome variable frequencies, subgroup comparisons, and relevant statistics (e.g., SD, 95% CI, p-values).
  6. Conclusion:
         > Summarise key findings and implications
         > Support conclusions with data from the abstract
         > Discuss generalisability and study limitations where applicable
  7. Key words: include 2-5 key words
  8. Relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
         > 1 – Poverty
         > 2 – Zero Hunger
         > 3 – Good Health & Wellbeing
         > 4 – Quality Education
         > 5 – Gender Equality
         > 9 – Innovation
         > 15 – Life on Land

Abstract Format

A confirmation email acknowledging receipt of your abstract submission will be automatically emailed to you once you have completed the online abstract submission. If you do not receive this confirmation email, or wish to make changes to your submitted abstract*, please contact the conference secretary by emailing to murs.fms@sjp.ac.lk.
