Faculty of Medical Sciences Oration 2026

The Research Committee of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) of University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) invites you to submit applications for the prestigious “FMS ORATION” for the year 2026. The oration will be delivered during the inauguration ceremony of the “International Conference on Medical Sciences 2026” on the 9th September, 2026.

Guidelines for Submitting an Application for an Oration

Structure of an Oration

An oration is a substantial, unified scholarly essay on a specific subject, developed from an individual’s series of publications or clinical observations. It should revolve around one or more clear key messages, with relevant findings and conclusions logically selected and integrated to support those messages. Rather than presenting separate studies in sequence, an oration must maintain a continuous, cohesive flow. The key messages should demonstrate strong scientific validity and rigor.

Preparing the Manuscript

  • Substantial portion of research work referred in the oration should be based on original research by the applicant.
  • The oration should be written in full. The IMRaD (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion) format is suggested unless the content requires otherwise.
  • A separate sheet stating the publications on which the oration is based on should be attached to the submission. There is no minimum number of studies that should be included in an oration. The applicant should however give sufficient material to prove that he/she has been working in the field for a considerable period.
  • The oration manuscript should be typed using Times New Roman, 12-point, double line spacing. Harvard or Vancouver system of referencing may be used.
  • All research involving human or animal subjects, the ethical approval statements should be included in the manuscript and approval document copies should be submitted.
  • In case of multiple investigator research, the applicant needs to provide his/her contribution to each part of the research process i.e. design, data collection, analysis and writing of manuscript. A declaration by the applicant needs to be attached with the manuscript that other co-investigators have no objection to the submission of application for the oration.
  • Applicant should declare if part/all research work of the manuscript has already been presented as an oration, funding sources and conflicts of interests.
