Interacting with Patients

You will have the opportunity to meet a wide variety of individuals using the hospital facilities as outpatients, in patients and visitors. although all of them do not speak English many well understand what you say as English is taught and used as the second language in Sri Lanka. However if you need assistance in communication, ask your fellow local students or the ward staff to interpret for you. Most patients and visitor are usually cooperative and helpful but you should always ask permission before any examination or procedure. Patients come from different cultural and religious backgrounds and you are expected to treat them with respect and dignity while being sensitive to the local culture and values. As a general rule application of basic medical ethics should guide your behaviour in the ward.
