TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I joined the Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura as a lecturer in 2001. In this university, Family Medicine is a final year subject and has a separate 100 marks assessment in the final MBBS examination since 2016. Theoretical teaching spans form the 2nd year to the final year. The students do one-month clinical rotation with family medicine, 2 weeks in the 4th year and 2 weeks in the final year. Apart from this, the Department coordinates the Preliminary Care Unit appointment in Base Hospital Homagama and coordinate the Community Based Medical Learning programme, a one-week residential rural posting. I have been involved in teaching Family Medicine, throughout the undergraduate teaching programme in all these activities.
The Family Practice centre is a recognized training centre for postgraduates following MD in Family Medicine and Diplomas in Family Medicine, Child Health, Elderly Medicine and Palliative Medicine, conducted by the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), University of Colombo. I take part in teaching them as well. The registrar and senior registrar training in family medicine involves, theoretical teaching, clinical training and formative assessment with work place-based assessments, guiding on research, audits and critical appraisals.
I am also a visiting lecturer for MD in Family Medicine, Diploma in Family Medicine, Diploma in Elderly Medicine and Diploma in Palliative Medicine and a visiting lecturer for the MCGP (Member of College of General Practitioners) course conducted by the College of General Practitioners in Sri Lanka. I conduct lectures on topics related to Family Medicine and on paediatrics as I have training in it.
I have a special interest in communication skills teaching, as the co theme leader for undergraduate communication teaching, I have been involved in conducting SGDs and preparing teaching learning material on communication. I received a training in teaching communication at King’s College London and now involved in teaching communication at post graduate level with training of trainers in communication, a programme conducted by the PGIM in collaboration with Sri Lanka Medical Association.
I am an examiner for undergraduate family medicine examinations at Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Keleaniya and at Kothalawala defense University. Examiner for Post Graduate examinations, DFM, MCGP and MD in Family Medicine. I have served as the chief examiner for both Diploma and MD in Family Medicine and for the MCGP examination. I served as the deputy exam convenor for the MRCGP South Asia International (Accredited by the Royal College of General Practitioners, UK) exam from 2011 to 2017 and now serving as the exam convenor for the South Asia region. The exam composed of 2 AKT exams and 2 OSCE exams every year. I am responsible for the overall conduct of the exam, as the OSCE lead for the case refining, reviewing and banking. I coordinate workshops on OSCE writing and piloting and simulated patient training.

Medicine
This Family practice centre functions as a model Family practice which gives personalized care in a continuing basis. There are six doctors, two practice nursing sisters, a laboratory headed by 2 medical laboratory technicians and a mini theatre to perform minor surgical procedures. It serves about 3000 registered families. Other than the members of these families, it provides services to a large number of walking in patients. So during a working session, one doctor sees about 15 to 20 patients.

- First contact care and continuing care for the individuals and families.
- Management of acute medical problems, emergencies and chronic medical problems.Physiotherapy services
- Patient education and counseling whenever necessary.
- Student teaching.
- Research activities and audits.
