SIDCER SURVEY 2019
The Ethics Review Committee (ERC) of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura was established in 1995 to provide ethical oversight to research done by staff and students of the university.
In November 2012 Ethics Review Committee, Faculty of Medical Sciences became the 2nd Ethics Review Committee in Sri Lanka to obtain international recognition when it was awarded Strategic Initiative for Developing Capacity in Ethical Review (SIDCER) recognition after an extensive survey which judged that Ethics Review Committee, Faculty of Medical Sciences met globally accepted standards in providing ethical oversight to research projects.
The initial SIDCER recognition was granted for a period of 3 years and Ethics Review Committee was evaluated in March 2015 resulting in re-recognition at the Annual General Meeting of Forum of Ethical Review Committees in the Asian and Western Pacific regions of held in Japan in November 2015.
After the first re-recognition the ERC is re-evaluated every 4 years, as per the terms of recognition by SIDCER. As such a team of surveyors from FERCAP consisting of 2 international and 2 local surveyors conducted a rigorous evaluation of Ethics Review Committee, Faculty of Medical Sciences from 9-11th of May 2019, after which the Ethics Review Committee has been cleared for re-recognition and the recognition certificate will be awarded at the AGM of FERCAP to be held in Penang, Malaysia in November 2019.
